Ray Miller Elementary
Kirksville RIII Schools - Kirksville

Ray Miller Collage

Ray Miller's signature achievement is its commitment to and ability to leverage community connections. It partnered with the Missouri River Community Network to fund an AmericCorps member to help develop quality outdoor programs taking advantage of its existing outdoor classrom and its Green Thumb Project (GTP). GTP started as a student group project at Truman State University and grew into an organization dedicated to providing nutrition and outdoor education in Kirksville. One example is the fall BioBlitz. Students practiced their net skills leading up to the blitz and then, assisted by 50 high school students, spent a day finding insects and other animals at the Department of Conservation Regional Office. The students also made and sold crafts made from discarded plastics and sold them to help fund restarting a recycling program at the school. The school also partners with the local YMCA, Extension, and Rotary to expand the diversity and depth of health related programs for students and their families.
