J.A. Rogers Elementary
Kansas City Schools - Kansas City

JA Rogers Collage

J.A. Rogers forms part of a natural corridor along the Blue River, with 60% of its campus permeable to water and 30% in forest that connects with Trailwoods Elementary. The school is implementing an energy management software package that provides real-time analytic reporting to help track energy and water use. Blue River Watershed Association partners with the school to teach 6th graders about earth systems and water cycle. Students collect water from fountains, parking lot puddles, and creekbeds to test for sediment, chemicals and other contaminants. KC Water Services teaches its "Journey of Stormwater" to 5th graders and learn how to estimate the amount of stormwater runoff from the school parking lot and then discuss an EPA consent decree concerning overflow control.
